H55F Gearbox/TC rebuild

A friend of mine was charged $3500 to rebuild his Troopy gearbox and transfer case BUT he had to remove and reinstal his own gearbox etc - so not the same but gives an idea of the cost of the actual job.

Does the price include new clutch, machine flywheel, replace rear main bearing oil seal etc? A lot to consider.

Wow they don't want the work.. unless they make a motza on it, which they will.

Considering that brand new H55F gear boxes have recently been available out of Sydney for approx $3500 the quote is ridiculous.. even if a clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and flywheel machining are included. A complete rebuild of an H55F/Transfer is generally around $3-4K parts included. You also risk them doing a very very basic rebuild and ignoring a lot of parts that may well be due for replacement.

Sorry I dont know anyone in Perth.. I would ask in some of the 70 series/Landcruiser Facebook groups.

I just went through the process of rebuilding the transfer on my H55f a couple of months ago. While I did do all the work myself and saved a bit of money, if I had to do it again I would bite the bullet and get an exchange fully rebuilt one from either Gympie 4wd spares or 360 gearboxes. About $4700 for gearbox and transfer as one unit, but then you have to add freight for both ways for exchange only, so of course plus cost of fitting.
I looked into it quite a lot before deciding to do it myself and was going to go with 360 gearboxes. (No affiliation) I only did it myself as I enjoy doing that sort of thing.
The cost has gone up a lot lately for the H55f’s, as they are such an old gearbox, they are finding that they have to almost always replace more than just bearings. This means there is an added cost for replacing things like shafts, gears, synchro’s etc. With mine I thought it just needed a bearing kit and discovered I had to replace all the gears too, so a simple rebuild turned into virtually an entire replacement. The exchange units come with 20000 K/12 month warranty and they also put in the modified input gear which is a must. The reason I was going to go with 360 gearboxes is that they only do gearboxes and nothing else. I know you are in Perth but the companies I mentioned ship their stuff all around Australia so there’d be no problems getting it to you, you’d just need someone to install it if not doing it yourself. I would recommend getting an exchange unit as the cost is all upfront and shop around for someone to fit it. Did your quote include a new clutch as well, which may be worth doing while gearbox is out?

I would consider putting a h150 behind the motor, look for an 80 series gearbox and transfer (part time) if i couldnt get a cheaper h55.
If the gearbox is ok, and you have lost drive, its most probably the transer main drive gear and the main shaft splines that have worn. You can buy aftermarket shaft with solid gear, a common issue for this transfer, which from the factory came with the option of a PTO. The new shaft negates the use of the PTO and makes the gear longer and stronger....im just theorising that is your issue, a competant mechanic could install it

So he misquoted the on the first quote.

Ended up coming in at $2464 in labour to remove rebuild and re- installed the GB/TC + $1607 for the rebuild kit for the box.
''Hi Richard, So the tech has stripped gearbox, t/case assy and found a few faults. Cluster shaft, input shaft, damage to 5th gear, dog, main and cluster, output gear, so price wise around what we thought. ''

Damage parts were replaced!

Asked to have an exchange box priced up from 360 and this was the response

''Hi Richard, I just spoke with 360 and there g/box, t/case $5350, plus freight around $600. Around a week to get here.''


Looks like a fairly neat and tidy job so fairly happy with what they have done, they've given a 2 year/20K warranty on the box as well.
