The fines are a joke, they should seize their vehicles and get the word out, if you enter a prohibited area, your vehicle will become state property.

I agree, 6 vehicles, $8000 fine each would pay for the damage. That should be the minimum if they ignored signs and continued on.

Here in SA I understand it is $1000.00 per tyre on or off vehicle if driving on a closed road / track, the damage these folks made amounted to a lot more than that but the fines would have been a lot more in line with the general responsible 4x4 drivers expectations I'm sure.

There may not have been signs prohibiting entry?
They have gained access through a fire trail, but may not have known NOT to ?
Or, they may have known exactly what they were doing was illegal…..we’ll never know.

According to local Townsville newspaper they drove pass warning signage. They knew exactly what they were doing. They were luck to not receive larger fines and cost of the helicopter rescue.

I once inadvertently drove on a closed road from Kroombit Tops towards Ubobo. No signage at the top, some interesting washed out creek crossings on the way down, and "Road Closed" signs at the bottom. Oh dear ..........
