Agree Wicket, when off the beaten track a PLB should be an absolute minimum to carry on your backpack and a Satphone does not take up any space either.

Wow, it just shows how quickly a pleasant walk in the bush can turn into a tragedy.
Well done David & Michelle for being able to assist.
Macca.

Its about time people were forced to carry an epirb/plb/spot..whatever. I shake my head in amazement that in this day and age people still lack common sense.

Even if our nanny state mentality “forced” people to carry such devices, there’d be plenty that don’t carry them . It would be impossible to enforce anyway.

The message would soon get across if those rescued who did NOT have a PLB etc, got a bill for the total cost of recovery.

I for one would not think to bring the plb on an evening stroll along the various virtually suburban picnic areas on the
Murrumbidgee River around
Canberra, yet there is no mobile service, even though in
places you can see
Telstra Tower on Black Mountain. Similarly for the many touristy coastal NPs around the country, yet I guess one should.
Mine lives in the glove box of the 4wd. Best practice would be to have another for the day pack, but then Murphy would have a say and the day that it was needed I would have the camera bag on my back instead.

Wow! Good thing D&M (or if not them, another responsible person or persons) were there.
I always hate to see
young children out in areas where there are few or no other people, accompanied by only one adult. Precisely because of the possibility of this sort of scenario.
