Information

The former Cement works in Portland NSW has respectfully been renamed The Foundations and is undergoing an exciting transformation. A rare combination of industrial heritage and picturesque natural beauty, the site is being revitalised into a unique regional destination offering a diverse range of authentic cultural, community and recreational experiences making it perfect for a short stay or more permanent lifestyle change.

With the irresistible lure of so many different activities to enjoy, all in one easily walkable site, The Foundations will be a destination unlike any other.
The painted silos stop visitors in their tracks as they gaze up at the men and women whose stories are woven into the fabric of the town.

The heritage buildings are now being activated with artists spaces, monthly and seasonal growers markets and workshops.

The Portland Cement Works opened in 1902, and with it came the demand for a workforce.

Great effort was taken to create a town that would appeal to families, and in return the willing workers provided their labour. A tightknit community was forged among the dust.

A town of laconic Australians, built on hope, resilience and a quiet pride.
Through the ups and downs of two wars and a depression, and dwindling output at the cement works in later years, it was finally closed in 1991.

Visit the Twilight markets. Your favourite stalls, great food and great music, and the STEAMWorks Craft Corner for kids. With over 80 stalls, the Twilight Market is one of the largest in the region.

Portland Silos are accessible 7 days a week between the hours of 10am and 5pm.

The Glen Museum is open every Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 3pm. The collection contains some unique and rare objects that provide a valuable insight into rural life in a town built around one industry and one company. It contains everyday household items, farming, hospital, social life, and business paraphernalia. The Glen is a non-profit organisation. Feel free to sign the guestbook and as there is no entry fee, all donations are greatly appreciated. All donations are utilised towards the ongoing care and maintenance of the museum.
