An aptly named Mallee with very large fruit (gumnuts). Although the mallee itself is not large - growing only a few metres in height - it has plenty of other "large" characteristics. There are big leathery leaves, large buds 2cm across and big flattened gumnuts 5-6cm across. Flowers vary in colour from cream through pink to red. Widely distributed in desert areas.
The peduncles (stems of the flower buds) are flattened and strap-like, while the flower buds are angular, topped with finger-like bud caps (operculum). The flowers hang downwards (pendant) and are greenish yellow.
Some known Aboriginal names:Munta, ngerp, nurp, nurt (Boanditj), Mantirri (Kaurna).
Manter (Ngaiawang), Mantari (Ramindjeri), Mantar (Jaril)

Common names Munterberry, Muntries, Munthries, Emu Apples, Native Cranberries

Kunzea pomifera is a woody ground cover occurring in the wild in western Victoria and SA. It was an important food plant for the local Aboriginal people. They dried or baked surplus fruit into cakes to eat during the winter months. They also traded the fruit for important tools with neighbouring tribes. The plants produce fluffy white flowers in spring, followed by berries in Feb-March. They should start producing berries three years after planting. Berries may remain green but still be ripe. If left too long, the berries become unpalatable.
Melaleuca halmaturorum has two widely separated occurrences. In eastern Australia it is found in western Victoria and southeastern South Australia, including Eyre Peninsula and Kangaroo Island [1]. In the south west of Western Australia it occurs mainly across the Avon Wheatbelt and Coolgardie regions. This species is usually a shrub or small tree to 8 m tall. It often forms thickets in swampy areas subject to waterlogging, including the fringes of salt lakes and samphire flats or near coastal dune systems. Soil types range from clays to loamy sands and are usually saline.
