Following the Big Wet - 2011 Trip – Part 17: Fossicking and moving north.

. We had only gone a couple of kilometres along the track to the amethyst fossicking area when we met a vehicle coming out. We stopped for a chat and to check that we were on the right track.

Hi John and Val,
We are like you when it comes to fossicking. Amateurs.
We plan to stay at the Cloncurry Oasis CP in June and thought that your amethyst fossicking sounded interesting.
Is it possible to post the directions to get to that site and could it be done as a day trip from Oasis CP.

Hi Wayne,

A day trip from Cloncurry would be a very full day, especially if you did a bit of exploring along the way. The 5 or 10 km in to the amethyst field is a bit challenging, though nothing that a capable 4WD can't handle.

Do you use OziExplorer? If so, we'd be happy to send you our Ozi track which will define the exact location of the field. Alternatively we could send you a file for viewing on Google Earth, but that's not a lot of help once you are on the ground.
