Not trying to boost membership. The question asked was about road conditions on the GCR - an answer is at that site.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules from the site but this is what's said - but having copied it here I accept no responsibility for the info. Anyone using this info should check it and decide for themselves.

The liability issue bbuzz is why I didn't copy it in the first place.

For anyone who is looking at doing GCR soonish and wanted a report
Just completed Laverton to Yulara today.
2021 SR Hilux towing a 20ft off road caravan.
Road conditions were average but did let our tyres down. There were good and rough parts. Couple of washed out (dry) bits just past Warburton but these are marked. Topped up at Laverton Diesel was 2.05 then we only stopped At Warakurna to fill up our jerry cans, Diesel was 2.90. Did rain a small bit just past Dock River.

For those that are not FB users, how do you view Private groups?

And by the time you eliminate all the rubbish there is not much left. The info here is more correct.

I'm with Stephen on the usefulness of Facebook.

A question was asked, I provided info, and then I got all this crap about Facebook.

If you don't want to join FB that's fine but don't expect to get the info and don't shoot the messenger.

Makes me think I shouldn't have bothered helping out!

+1. I'm as negative as anyone on the general merits of FB and it's usefulness for social discourse. Nonetheless, the FB groups discussing various remote regions and routes are a useful source of information on current conditions. You have to be prepared t filter out some noise, but that's certainly the case here as well.

And one great Facebook group, Outback Yonder by EO Member Alan McCall has more information there than he posts here on ExplorOz.

You do not have to filter the information on his site, it’s always full of historical and useful information, so those that bag out Facebook, you are not on the right sites.

Same as my site, South Australia, Reflections Past and Present you will never find and crap on it, only very useful information and places to see and visit.

When I reluctantly signed up to FB over a decade ago (as the only way I could find to contact someone), I was impressed with its capacity to identify networks of people you may know. But I quickly came to realise that it's a poor way to keep in touch with friends, family, and acquaintances. And FB's insistence on showing you things that yo might be interested in based on its algorithms is mostly very annoying and rarely useful. I've no idea why it suddenly thought that I was interested in Elvis Presley!

IMHO the power of FB lies in its groups. With the demise of Yahoo groups, it's a useful source of special interest groups. I'm bemused that people complain about the low signal-to-noise ratio of FB, and yet tolerate it on forums like this one. Getting this back on topic, the GCR FB group is a useful source of relevant information. Show me a better one.

We were up in Mossman when a mob of model As and model Ts rolled up. They came from Adelaide in a fairly straight line. They had a few support vehicles with them. The only vehicles that required repairs were the support vehicles.

That was in the days before 4WDs arrived and the cowboys cut the roads up proving they could get through in any weather.

Possibly Phil, but the sealed sections of the Great Northern Highway, and the Cape Leveque roads didn’t help much in the recent rain events. Granted, these events are generally few and far between, but they seem to be more frequent of late.
