Well I'm not a great fan of kings gear but they come up with a 110 watt glass solar panel the right size for my roof racks a year or two ago so I got it and it's just sat around so I finally got round to fitting it.
About half hr from getting it to testing it I turned on the waeco so it had some work to do when connected, I really wasn't expecting much.
Coincidence it was that it was mid day today when I plugged it in in full sun and got 6.3 amps into my redarc bcdc. I was amazed seeing its rated ISC is 5.73amps.
Can't complain about that.

I'm no big fan of 98% of their gear either.. but their solar panels and LiFePO4 batteries all seem of adequate quality.

Their "Jump Starters" seem to work fine.

Is that figure of 6.3 amp the flow going into the REDARC or leaving the REDARC and is the battery current charging the battery?

I ask this because 5.73 amps with a GOOD MPPT charger will see over 6 amps delivered to the battery through MPPT action and optimum switching of available energy level out of solar.

Very Tom Jones, it is not unusual!

Short-Circuit Current (Isc)

This is the highest current the solar panels will produce under standard test conditions – note that under a clear sky, at midday in summer, and tilting the panel towards the sun you could get significantly more current.

Therefore, no surprise really!
If the MPPT Redarc was holding the panel at 17V and 6.3 amp then you were getting around 107 watts which is close to claimed. On a good day, it is good!

Its good when things go well and work out better than expected. I had the same experience with Renogy panels o 200watt panels I often saw an extra 2 amps going into the batteries over what the specs were. Naturally clear skies were needed. I also bought a Kings 12v electrical control box (second hand) and it is a really good unit that I mounted in the tub of my Triton. Cheap and very fit for purpose.. Had a Kings roof top tent for 3 tears and it performed very well as well. I use to hang shite on thier products but I,ve since changed my mind. Expensive isnt always better. Cheers.

I've changed my mind about Kings. From my experience their stuff is just as good as nearly everyone else. It all probably comes out of the same group of factories in China with a different brand name on it. I can do without their email barrage though. A big tip, never pay full price. Whatever you want will be half price sooner or later, usually sooner.

Unfortunatly what you say is most likley true, for the price I very much doubt that any of the stupid name brands actually employ or even consult a structural, or any other type of engineer to have any input into the manufacture of any of their products, just off the shelf so to speak.
Chinese products chop and change all the time so the quality and even design of the products may change with every container load of product.
If your happy with your lithium battery you bought a year ago so buy another doesn't mean your getting the same product but the up side is there is an equal chance that it be better as it is being worse. All you can do is cross your fingers.

I look at every product on face value, I have had good results with Kings in general but I pick and choose what to buy. I rather spend extra coin with other brands on electronics but there are plenty of other stores selling the equivalent product with a different sticker on it for more money

Unfortunately it's hit and miss with everything you buy these days no guarantee a company that had a good rep 15yrs or more ago has maintained that as the quality of their products drop which has been proven by the amount of people posting more and more issues with once reputable brands.
I have a 20yr old Evakool still working and not expecting any problems it just keeps going. I still have a few other cheaper brands of fridges my 15ltr Kings console fridge is a bit over 3yrs old and works well but realistically I'm not going to be surprised if the electronics fail one day but it was cheap and usually just for drinks and snacks. I bought another one over Xmas as they had a sale on at around half the price I paid over 3yrs ago so how do they do that. It's a spare ready to take the other ones place when the day comes. I had a dearer digital control Waeco that only lasted 5yrs which was disappointing and I suppose an example of a company that has dropped the ball for profits.
In saying that we have an 18ltr thermostat dial control Waeco that's 6yrs old and works well.

Having worked for well over a decade in the building supply industry (including roles selecting product for sale) I can attest to situations where we purchased almost identical products from the same factory having dramatically different quality (and quality control). So long as you are involved in the manufacturing process, the same base product can be obtained using significantly different parts and quality systems.

An example- we sourced a mixer tap from one company which used the same cartridge as a well known (and reliable) european manufacturer, including certification of QC controls. We obtained exactly the same LOOKING mixer with budget cartridge and no certification for well less than half the price. We charged appropriately and some of our builder clients used one product, others chose the alternative!

Not suggesting many companies don't use the same items and charge more, but all is not always as it appears.

Cheers,
Mark

I can attest to what Silkwood said, I have been to the trade shows in China and the same company will build the identical looking product with your choice of Japanese Bearings, Chinese bearings or just bronze bushes , visually you can’t tell the difference between them

The reviews that I have watched on YouTube from reliable people I follow , would suggest that previous comments would not be the case .
To believe some of these particular comments or thoughts would be like believing that there was only one company producing a certain product & just rebranded
The reviews often point out the difference in quality and design of some of these products good or bad .

Very rarely trut you tube reviews or experiences. So many wankers on their with sponsored products that its embarressing. Many have no real experience or idea about the chosen subject or cherry pick specs to suit. I have more faith in forums, such as this, where real life experiences are tabled and often followed up with further discussion/comments from fellow memebers. Even on hear some people have selected /biased views towards a subject . Often through experience or ignorance. Collecting as much information from as many sources and sorting the true from the false is key when purchasing any product.

Bigfish . I would totally agree with what you say but with forums or YouTube you are going to get those w...people that would say anything to impress their thoughts on you .

The majority of my TV viewing would be YouTube so I'm pretty quick to sort out the good from the bad if it's a review or one of my chosen interests . as you say there is a lot of crap on there but that wasn't really my point .

One of the good things with YouTube (paid subscriber) is that when you start researching a particular item they will send you suggestions of videos on the subject and you might be lucky enough to stumble on a YouTuber which are referred to as reliable .

Yes their fixed solar panels work great.
I have 2x 160W panels mounted flat on my van, they have recorded 312W incoming.
My 110W panel has also recorded 107W.

Not heard the best about their fridges or air compressors. Seems like they either work great or die within the first couple uses. If you get a good one then all is good!!!

A fair while ago, my brand new Kings air compressor didn't work at all straight out of the box. I was on a bush track at the time. It took a while for my opinion of them to defrost, but it's better now. :-)

As a general comment, I'd expect anyone's glass panel to perform reasonably well, but I have serious doubts about any and all folding solar mats and blankets, based on my experience. You may get lucky, but there's a pretty good chance that you won't. My experience with a very well-known brand of solar mat was exactly the same as Gronk's, even with a second copy after the first copy was replaced under warranty.

Although I'm wary of Kings gear, I've got a few of their bits and pieces. I'm not at all surprised about the OP's good experience with Kings glass panels, but I would not generalise from that.

Before buying a Kings solar panel, I’d be asking to walk outside and do a short circuit test on it before buying.

Just out of interest, what is the frame size/dimensions of the panel you have? With frame size being larger than the area of active solar cells, the size can be used to determine the efficiency of the cells, ie, 180w for 1 sq metre of cell area. = 18 % efficiency. Frame size will be larger of course.
Interesting to get an idea of the ability of the cells being used. Yours might be newer spec cells with higher efficiency for same area.

Just trying to do a test with the panel at operating temp but waiting to get a decent break in the clouds.
So far very happy but only up to 76 watt's but that was at 9am.
Not too bad for a cheapy.

Missed with the pic, it is in its own reply.
I'm pretty happy with the result considering it was about 1030 and a flat mounted hot panel.
Worth the effort of fitting it.

Those reading on the meters show around 97Watts, so pretty good for a panel like that.

I recently set up a DC DC unit in my ute and a very similar clamp meter to yours, and found it liked having the Negative/return line separated from near the clamp over the Pos line. and away from the clamp itself. Just seemed to read better.
