Windjana Gorge

Hi all, MIL just tried to tell me that there you are no longer allowed to camp at Windjana gorge. She says friends travelled there recently and were told no camping anymore.

Does anyone know if this is true, i was going to head out tomorrow for the weekend. Wont be happy if its changed, no reason why it should have.

Kroozer...You would be just the right person to try and answer a question for me about the same place...we have a Falcon wagon towing a 17.6ft dual axle poptop and are wondering if it would be o.k. to travel that gravel road from the highway at Fitzroy Crossing end to the gorge and out the other end...next July is the planned time...we are planning to camp there also...cheers

The road between tunnel creek and windjana gorge can get pretty ruff later in the season. It be hard to say what next year will be like at any time. I reckon tunnel creek is a better visit then Windjana but no camping. Best to find out when your at Fitzroy to see if the grader has been through recently. I found it the roughest bit of road after been on the Gibb. Glad it wasn't too far.

Yeah have to agree with Haza, every year the roads are different because of many things. Personally i wouldnt take a Falcon on any of the dirt roads up here, never mind towing a van. But in saying that, it all depends on what the road is like at that time, how your vehicle is set up and how well prepared you are. Last year in August i followed a brand new holden ute, stock standard only done 10,000kms from Derby to Wyndham along the Gibb road. Didnt miss a beat and the ride was beautiful they say. I seen it go into some awkward places and at the end of the trip it still looked brand new. Funniest thing was, seeing about 7 people standing on the opposite side of the Pentecost, from 3 seperate cars, witing for someone else to cross it. I told this fella go for it, never a problem this crossing. Should of seen the peoples faces, barely 30cm deep and they were probably waiting hours to cross.

Back to your question though, take it easy, and prepare yourself appropriately and i think you should be right. Although it is definitely not the preferred way, it is not impossible at all.

There are two areas set aside for visitors at Windjana Gorge.

One is reserved for camping and the other is set aside for day trippers. There is sign at the day use area prohibiting camping in the day area.

We camped in the there in June. All okay.

That road changes from month to month. When we did it, it was as rough as guts - definitely no place for normal road vehicles. Check with the locals when you get there, or hang about at the turn-off and ask any survivors when they emerge at the bitumen ;-)

The Windjana campground had separate areas for generator and non-generator camping.

Hi Kroozer camped at windjana 4 weeks ago generator and non generator sites and good sites at that.nice backdrop looking toward the cliffs.young guy called jarra was running the site when we were there.mention donnybrook and adam hunter from the eagles nd he will remember us .best time for the walk is early morning and go back later when the suns out to see the freshys. One of the best camp sites on the gibb in our opinion ,we stayed 2 nights.

regards Graeme.

We're staying in Derby at the moment and just been to Winjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek today. Had a look at both campsites while we were at Windjana and both operating as normal.

Lucky blighters!! we were there last year (a bit earlier in the season). Fantastic part of the world (Bell Gorge too is fantastic). Our highlight was a flight to the Horizontal Falls from Derby (wouldn't go near Broome it we could avoid it, and flights operate from both places).

It's a wonderful part of the world up here. We're on our way around to Darwin and then Qld as part of our 5 month treck. Just left Broome and wasn't too bad but the place was packed with the Broome Cup and Staircase to the Moon in the same week. Managed to beg, borow and steal our way into Cable Beach C/Van park and it's a nice spot to recharge after leaving Perth.

The Gibb River Rd from Derby end is quite good but once you reach the turn-off on the Fairfield Leopold Downs road is very rough with bad corrugations in most parts. Having said said it didn't stop all sorts of on and off-road vans and campers being towed up and down the road all day.
