They reckon as much as half the
population of
Alice Springs camp along the track to watch the race. They tend to congregate around the best vantage points.
One drawback of this is the all night parties that go on. That is of course unless you want to party all night.
There are some real nice stands of oaks near the off road race club. It is reasonably popular & is very nice camping(if you want to party) with a bit of
shelter. I like the scenery around there too.
Try & get a spot where there is a good dune with a bit of a kicker on it. The 40 k mark out of Alice is a beauty. Very very popular though.
Bends or twists in the track or creek crossings are good too. There are some good viewing spots in road section south of Deep
Well, but I think the camping might be a bit more exposed.
Don't
camp too close to the track & make sure you are upwind.
Make sure you go to the scrutineering in at the
show grounds. It could stand as an event on its own. It is almost a meet & greet for the racers. They are all on for a chat about their Bikes, Quads, Side-cars & Buggys.
The prologue is good too.
It is a phenomenal race event. You don't just turn up & sit in a grandstand & watch a race like you do at the grand prix or V 8 supercars. At the Finke you will probably become mates with some of the racers. You
camp near them in the van park, have a beer with them & they might even stop & say g'day if you are out on the track on a practice day.
I can't wait
See you there.
