Edition 276: 29th November 2012

Hi ExplorOz Reader,

Once the most highly secretive location for the testing of British Nuclear weapons and devices on the Australian mainland, Maralinga now offers modern day four wheel drivers the opportunity to witness first-hand the true beauty of the Australian Outback and visit an area of Modern Day Nuclear history that for decades has made this isolated location restricted to Government Officials and Scientists.

With the final clean-up and the official handing back of this land to its Traditional Owners in 2009, Maralinga is now easier to visit than ever before. And to help you get there and explore the area, you'll find three brand new Maralinga Treks on ExplorOz.

New ExplorOz Treks

Maralinga via Colona

This is the major route to Maralinga, particulary for travellers approaching from the South East.

Suitable for all vehicles including rigs towing caravans or camper trailers. View the full Trek Note here.

Maralinga via Nullarbor Roadhouse

Approaching Maralinga from the South West, this route is for the more adventurous driver, and will take you through the very heart of the Nullarbor Plain.

Suited to 4WD and AWD vehicles.
View the full Trek Note here.

Maralinga Range Tour

See first hand an area that for decades has been out of bounds to all but Government Officials and learn about Australia's Nuclear past. This Trek guides you through the Maralinga Range.

View the full Trek Note here.

Trek Note Tip:

Don't forget you can click on the Arrow next to the Start/Finish of each Trek to reverse the order of its Driving Directions.

The Ride Documentary

Strap yourself in as four Aussie blokes swap wheelchairs for quad bikes and embark on the ride of their lives.

This documentary charts their 5000km adventure across the outback, as they visit the crash sites where their lives changed forever. Want to know more? View the Trailer here.

The Ride team are aiming to take their film on an Australia-wide tour hosting screenings for local communities, organisations and schools, and they need your help to do it. To support this project simply go to their crowdfunding website here. There are also some great rewards and gifts on offer for those who donate.
