The Hickman Meteorite Crater was first discovered in 2007 by Dr Arthur Hickman of the Geological Survey of Western Australia. He was using Google Earth to look for iron ore deposits when he noticed the unusual circular structure that today bears his name.

The crater is believed to be between 10,000 and 100,000 years old and it is situated around 36 kilometres in a straight line north from the Pilbara town of Newman.

The access tracks to the crater are reasonably easy to navigate, but use extreme caution as you negotiate the rocky sections leading towards the crater. The road trip from Newman to the Crater takes around 3 hours one way. This is all dependant on weather and actual track conditions. The area is remote with scant Telstra 3G phone coverage.

Driving directions are available from the Newman Tourist Information Centre. An access pass to traverse a BHP mine road is also required and can be obtained at the Tourist Centre
