Small tree with rough scaly tessellated bark over the trunk and branches. Leaves are the same colour on both faces with no intramarginal vein. Buds are arranged in dense terminal panicles. Each bud is a creamy colour, with a hemispherical to conical operculum (bud cover). The fruit (gum nuts) is a distinctive urn shape. The common name of bloodwood describes the bright red sap that forms hard shiny lumps on the bark.
Flowering start in June and ends in September.
