Today we’ve released a BETA version of our new 2026 ExplorOz maps.
These maps are the topographic maps (EOTopo) we create and maintain, which:
- Are available to everyone via our free online map viewer
- Form the base map used across the ExplorOz website, including
Places,
Treks, and server tracking (Tracker)
- Will later be released into the
ExplorOz Traveller app for offline use
Right now, this update is website-only.
The Traveller app has not been updated yet.
WHY THIS BETA EXISTS:
This public beta allows:
- Users to view the new maps early
- The community to report errors or missing details
- Us to complete final testing and corrections
Once the maps are released into the Traveller app later in January, they cannot be changed until the next annual edition, so this feedback stage is important.
WHAT'S IMPROVED IN THE 2026 MAPS?
- Better visibility of roads and tracks at lower zoom levels
- Full update to all roads/tracks data Australia wide
-
Gate information added (including known locked gates)
- Updated land access mapping, including exclusion zones, Native Title areas,
reserves, and conservation parks
- Updated coordinate handling to support both GDA94 and GDA2020
- Full update to all topographic features Australia wide
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
-
Places information is separate from the maps (so
Places is not the focus of the EOTopo update)
- The 2026 maps will be released into the Traveller app later in January, along with a required app update
- Today’s release only affects what you see on the website
