Anyone out there like me that uses the brilliant Starlink Mini, they have now changed the $80/50gb Monthly data usage to 100gb for the same price.

Great News for everyone that uses Starlink.

I got the message about the mini but there wasn’t anything about the Starlink on the house. I think Stephen is correct. I have no idea what the house plan is they just take the money & I’ve never run out of data.

Correct Gordon,

I looked at all the various contracts with Starlink, both fixed home and Mobile. All the fixed home contracts all had unlimited data and it was only the Mini on Roam that offered 2 contracts, the Unlimited Data at $195 per month and the the Roam $80/50gb monthly package which is the only contract that has doubled the Data allowance at no extra charge to 100gb a month.

I did ask Rod to please elaborate, but I think he is fishing for a debate that holds no water.. The only other thing that I could find is if you have a fixed home Starlink account, they offered a Mini for free and those Roam fees are heavily discounted as you are an existing Starlink account holder.

With your Roam contract, when your trip is over, you then simply go back on the Standby account at $8.50 per month that is still adequate for making phone calls and limited data speeds.

Hi A' McC. - AI response: "Criticisms regarding the negative impacts of Elon Musk's actions and influence on democracy generally fall into three main areas: the consolidation of power in an unelected individual, the use of his social media platform (X) to spread misinformation and hate speech, and his direct involvement in government operations". Have you used or owned Starlink John ?

You will find it is only people that have no idea on it are the ignorant ones on just how it works and are the ones that make all the negative comments.

It gives you access to all forms of data anywhere on the earth surface, and as an example my friends that live and manage stations on the Birdsville Track have ditched their homstead satellite home services and gone all Starlink.

With the distances they travel out from the homesteads, the distances are too great for UHF contact, but with the Mini’s mounted on the vehicles, they have phone contact anywhere to the outside world on their stations.

Stephen

An acquaintance who runs remote tag along tours in WA has starlink.
Ran into him last year on his way home from of his CSR trip.
We were camped in the Pilbara and I had dodgy mobile reception.
He turned on his starlink and gave me his password.
I was impressed.
He told me his clients loved it.
Probably an essential for that type of business.

Musk hater here. :)
Also a hypocrite, at least until there is a reasonable alternative to allow me to jump ship from Starlink.
Currently on the $8.50 per month option which is good for wifi calling, email, social media (without video) & sending this message to the forum.

It’s going to make a big difference and the most reliable modern form of communication, and if what we read is correct, its only going to get better with his plans to almost double the satellites in orbit and even faster speeds.

It seems Starlink is in some sort of discount frenzy at the moment. Something I understand is not that unusual.
I am considering a residential package as our internet has deteriorated to the point of compromising our safety. We have very little radio signal and rely on internet for bushfire and other emergency info. Starlink is advertising free hardware at present ie no up front cost for the dish. But when I investigated it there is a $244 charge for my address - something like a demand premium. The monthly charge is $139 oh and by the way I have to return the dish if I ever want to leave. I am also led to believe that dealing direct with Starlink is not much fun.

Enter Telstra. As of yesterday their price has dropped for the hardware too - from $549 to $349 - and I own the gear. Monthly charge is $125. Doesn't take long to do the maths. Now I accept that dealing with Telstra is no walk in the park either but I can at least walk into their shop and do face to face.

Personally I think Musk is a bit like the Collingwood FC. You either love them or hate them but you can't deny their success.

Kenell can you take you Telstra gear out into the middle of Australia and have all the benefits as city people? Do you actually know how a Mini works? You just have the dish, power it up, no external modem and the away you go.

Then you say “dealing with Starlink is not much fun”…..how how can you make a Statement when you are not even a Starlink customer?

I have had to contact them on a couple of times and they were very prompt and professional.

You stick with your anti Musk comments, and now I ask you who else at this time can offer reliable internet like the Mini to use in our most remote location here in Australia and every other corner of the earth,

Stephen,

Be careful - you might injure yourself jumping to conclusions. You have completely misunderstood my post. I was commenting on your post re pricing and how it is not just the mini that is coming down but also the residential. Others had also mentioned the residential variances.

I have no need for a Mini. Most of my remote travelling is behind me.

I have assisted with the installation and implementation of 2 Minis on both of my son's vehicles. It is they who informed me that dealing with Starlink directly has been frustrating. Nevertheless they find the technology reliable and it assists in their extensive remote touring. I did say "I am led to believe" which was based on their independant experiences.
Yes - I know how it works and in fact I speak to them most weeks. Sometimes with perfect clarity others with generally acceptable levels of reception.

I never said that I am anti Musk. In fact I am completely agnostic about the man. My comment was along the lines of - love him or hate him you can't argue his success.

Ultimately I will have a residential Starlink. At present - Telstra offer a better package than Starlink directly. The way things are changing it may be different next week. Which is the point I was making.

Kenell

If you get the Startlink Residential, they will give you a Mini for free and half price Mini contracts, you will only have to pay $40 per month for the Roam 100gb monthly fee compared to me having to pay $80 and the Roam unlimited for $97.50 a month.

Peter, your "Telstra" link opens to "Telstra Satellite Messaging" which is a highly constrained service. It is only available to limited phones and plans but even then does not allow 000 calls.
I would certainly not consider it an option for reliability.
As for Optus, I would not go near them with a 40 foot pole!
However, as you say "Times are a changing" but until they do, I had best not leave the mobile connectivity zones without some risk, or a PLB.

Thats why you need Starlink. Turn the Mini dish on, connect to the WiFi signal and you will have instant internet, instant phone calls anywhere.

When we were up on the Birdsville Track recently, we used it and phone calls are just as if you are ringing from a capital city and now delay as like on a satellite phone.

Starlink is now a true game changer for any serious Outback traveller.

You have to get with the times for the latest communications and safely in the Outback.

Well Allan - I'm happy for you that you are doing better than me in life financially as I cannot afford that telescopic pole at that price as much as I would love to have one !

It could come in very handy for you when you're in the caravan park at happy hour and you notice some fresh seagull droppings on the Sprinters window - you would just need to reach behind your deck chair to grab it, extend it, reach over Roz's head and without even getting off your chair and putting down the hors d'oeuvres and Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label, clean up said mess, retract the pole, continue with hors d'oeuvres along with giving your very helpful and knowledgeable 12 volt advice to fellow campers in the circle !

Happy and safe travels ( with clean windows )

All seems pretty good for 100Gb of data, but depends on how you want to use it.
Had a friend who had the 80Gb of data…..brought his starlink for a weekend away and we watched the footy for 2 nights….had 5Gb left after the weekend.
For a person on the road permanent, the full plan for $190/mth would be the go, but for the weekend camper like myself, even the $80/mth plan wouldn’t be worth it.
But for a rural user with no other option, its a great idea….just doesn’t work for everybody.

The $80 ROAM plan is not designed for heavy use and it is advised to go the ROAM unlimited.

Just for curiosity, your friend with the 80gb data plan, who was that with?

Starlink have not had that in the ROAM offers, its always been either the $80/50gb or $195/unlimited monthly account.
