Horseshoe Top End - Flinders Ranges Little Gem

When we think of the Flinders Ranges, one would immediately think of places like Rawnsley Park, Wilpena Pound, Blinman or Arkaroola, but I bet most would never have heard of Horseshoe Top End.

Away from the crowds, Horseshoe Top End has dedicated camping locations that are private and you are at least 3 kilometres away from your nearest neighbour when camping at Horseshoe Top End.

Each private campsite has a fire ring and your own very special Eco long drop toilet, that are the best toilets that you have seen, with no smell what so ever that is always associated with these type of toilets.

The property also has two dedicated four wheel drive tracks that are classed as moderate and advanced. To be honest, the advanced track is not hard for anyone with four wheel drive experience and these tracks are a must do when staying here. Depending on the time of year that you visit, you could see some of the local native wildflowers in bloom.

The area is given the name Horseshoe for the reason that the range is in the shape as a giant horseshoe and geologists have described the location as a miniature Wilpena Pound. It is not until you do the four wheel drive tracks that you fully appreciate this as you drive along the ridge that gives outstanding view to the plains below.

Scatted throughout the property are old ruins that were once the former homes of early pastoralists that first settled in the area in the 1800’s.

There is one shower block centrally located on the property, but there are no powered sites, so if you are intending an extended stay here, you must have a way of charging the batteries on your van or camper, either generator or solar.

We made our first visit here last year during the height of most States COVID lock downsands and it was so special that we are going back again soon for an even longer stay. Don’t take my word on how great this spot is, you only have to read the reviews on Wikicamps to hear just how great it is here.

Goods dirt road give access to Horseshoe Top End and any conventional vehicle towing a caravan will have no issues getting there, providing that it is not wet of course.
