Who's idea is it to recommend people mount there starlink antenna to the inside of there windscreen. On our recent outback trip every vehicle that wasn't a farm or
mine vehicle had their antenna suction cupped to either the centre or the passenger inside of the windscreen

Ivan, not only Starlink, but GPS screens, right in front of the drivers, absolutely crazy. Also the trend for new cars to have humongous screens as the dashboard, such as this one.

Kia Dash
How can they not be distractions while driving?

I have noticed this as
well, some times just sitting on the dashboard.
You would hate to think of what damage that could do in the case of an accident, let alone the obstructed view.

They don't bother booking the thousand of people driving with fog lights on at night which is illegal so why would they bother.

A dish in an accident will be a flying lethal weapon
Fog lights are not

The majority weren't sitting on the dash, they were stuck to the windscreen. This blocks probably a third of the drivers forward vision.

to say it blocks a third of the windscreen is a bit far fetched. I ran my mini inside the window for a long time and it never impacted my FOV . there is plenty of other shit in a car that can be a missile so not sure why you are getting hella worked up over it

I have just driven to
Darwin from Vic. From my observations there are indeed a lot of vehicles with Starlinks on the screen or dash. I suspect a judicious Police officer might determine FOV issues with some although most seemed to be mounted
well over to the side. One third would be a stretch. Not sure they present much of a missile in an accident with minimal weight and generally secured by suction cups.
I mount
mine on magnets on the roof but have to consider security each time we leave the car. I know some mount them in the sunroof.
Life's all about compromise eh ?

Ivan,
The definition of “in your vision” is very subjective and often misunderstood. Something on the extreme left hand side of the windscreen could be argued as being not in the direct “vision” of the driver. Rear view camera monitors, navigation screens as in HEMA etc. mounted on top of the dash, can be classed as in the vision of the driver, even in the centre of the dash, and they are certainly wider than 40 mm.

I am not a fan of the internal mounting but I do understand the reasons for it. I haven't been able to find anything definitive that suggests it is illegal. Aust Road Rule 297 is subjective at best in relation to windscreen vision and I can't find any reference to the 40mm limit.
Laws often take time to be rewritten as technology develops and perhaps this is such an example but happy to be directed to the law by someone who is up to date with it.

No worries mate, as long as you aren't doing it, let the
DARWIN AWARD competitors complete their mission! They will be fully informed until their demise! Death induced by STARLINK or INFO SCREEN will become a status symbol to strive for.
You aren't allowed to use a PHONE but it is legal to have huge screens to divert you from driving, and are supplied New as ROADWORTHY with that garbage!

If you think that's as bad as drivers at highway speeds with a third of their vision blocked, then you go for it.

Seeing things like this and more substantial mounts advertised. If you have the dash real estate away from airbags, shouldn't be an issue, you could even put a cloth cover on it to combat reflections.

Hi Warren,
Wouldn’t putting a cloth over it reduce its ability to see the satellites, particularly if you are using it for navigation.

Not unless there is metal threads within the cloth. A sheet of cotton or synthetic material is just like the white covers you see over the microwave dishes.

Yep, see it all the time. Stupidity. Its a potential projectile, a visual obstruction to the driver must get bloody hot through the windscreen magnifying the suns rays.
Ours is firmly bolted to a roof mount on our vehicle and easily sends the wifi signal through our caravan when attached or along side. No faraday cage effect.
People to lazy or not practical to work out where/how to run the cable from inside to outside.
