S***tbox Rally 2016 – Eucla to Streaky Bay

Peter Beard (WA)

Pete and Paul are in Streaky Bay SA staying overnight at the historic Streaky Bay Hotel directly opposite the town’s famous jetty. Great old pub with sweeping views of the bay from the al fresco area and through the windows of the front bar.

Pete and Paul parked across the road from the pub and walked into reception to organise a couple of rooms, no problem, but on returning to the car there was a growing puddle of petrol underneath.

On closer inspection the boys found that the hose that connects the main fuel line to the tank had ruptured and fuel was steadily drip, drip, dripping onto the road. There’s a petrol station and tyre service called Crowder’s behind the pub so Pete and Paul went and made friends. Pete told the owners Jack and Katy McInnis they were in the S***box Rally to raise funds for the Cancer Council and they kindy let the boys use a hoist free of charge to replace the fuel hose themselves. Much better than rolling around on your back in a pub carpark.

They didn’t even want to charge Pete and Paul for the two hose clamps they used so Paul marched next door back to the pub and came back with a carton of beer for the boss and the boys in the workshop.

Pete and Paul can’t thank Katy and Jack enough for their help and generosity. A lot of small businesses really struggle in the bush and it’s great to see this kind of generosity, especially when it’s for such a good cause: the Cancer Council. If you’re ever in Streaky Bay and need a tyre, a puncture fixed or some mechanical repairs, call in and support one of Australia’s excellent country town small businesses.

Apart from the fuel leak it was a fault free day. Long may they continue. As a footnote, one thing Pete and Paul did notice while the car was on the hoist was that a rear axle seal has started leaking, so tomorrow it will be a side trip to a car parts place in Port Augusta to get another bearing and seal kit and hopefully convince another kind mechanic in Broken Hill that they need to lend us a hoist and press so we can fix that other small problem.

But more on that tomorrow…

Bit most important, to help Pete and Kris help the Cancer Council make a difference in the fight against cancer click here and then click on the Give Now button. Cancer Council Australia is the nation’s peak non-government cancer control organisation and advises the Australian Government and other agencies on practices and policies to help prevent, detect and treat cancer. Remember, every little bit helps.
