Cape York via Simpson Desert 1 July 2015 – Day 30

A road transport section today - the long drive from Katherine to Kununurra - so not much to report. First up, a bit of sightseeing and exercise - out to Katherine Gorge and a walk up to the Baruwei Lookout. Well worth the steep climb for a view over the Katherine River. This is another place that could take days to explore properly. We’ve been through Katherine twice before but this is the first time we’ve actually had a chance to visit its famous gorge. Need more time.




The Victoria Highway across the north west of the Northern Territory takes in some spectacular scenery. First is the Gregory National Park, massive red rocky hills rent by the deep, wide Victoria River. From Timber Creek the boab trees start to dominate the scenery - fat bodies, bare branches that look like roots. Really weird trees that look like they have been dug up and replanted upside down. A sure sign you are nearing the Kimberley region of WA.




Approaching the WA border the red rocky hills start again as you climb through Gregory's Pass. The final hurdle is quarantine - very necessary and very thorough - then it's on to the haven of Kununurra. We are back in our home state and checked in to Lakeview Apartments. now it's time for a beer and a stroll next door to the Pinctada Kimberley Grande for a couple of beers and to see what's on the dinner menu.
