Halls Creek to Kununurra

We were on the road again at 6.10am! We stopped at Halls Creek roadhouse for breakfast which was very greasy and we fed most of it to the local stray dog! Pulled out the laptop while having a coffee to update our tracking. It seems the "Trackme" draws a straight line from point to point but only when the iphone is in mobile range so if you are looking at the map and wondering why we keep straying off the Gt.Northern Hwy that is why!
Not long after Halls Creek we turned off the Hwy and took the road into the Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park). The road in was 53km to the Visitor Centre and very corrugated, lots of twists and turns, a few water crossings and took just over 2 hours! The campsite was excellent! We had a great large shady site and not too many people. Lit a campfire and cooked baked potatoes and of course toasted marshmallows for the kids! It was really hot and not a bit of breeze making it a rather sticky night!
The next morning we went off to do one of the trails. We went to Echidna Chasm. Awesome!! Lots of walking over large rocks (dried up river bed) to get to the Chasm which was very narrow but extremely tall. Large boulders that had fallen were wedged precariously between the rocks above us which were a bit unnerving! The sheer size of this place was spectacular! The next day we went out to Cathedral Gorge and the Domes trail. Again, another spectacular place! Photos don't do this place justice as it is very hard to try and put the size of this place into perspective! The Domes trail was a bit of a hike and the girls struggled in the heat. We ended up having to piggy-back them some of the way. For the keen, you can do a 2 day trek through here! The only down-side to this was the sheer volume of tourists. Bus loads of people being brought in here every day. It resembled a very long human ant-trail on some of the walks! We spent the afternoon back at the campsite cooling off in the shade and peace and quiet. We were the only people there until about 4pm when more campers started turning up!
We only spent 3 nights in the Bungles and this time the road out only took 1.5hrs. We made it to Turkey Creek by 10am where we stopped for morning tea. Hit the road again and got into Kununurra around 1pm. We have checked into the Hidden Valley Tourist Park for a couple of nights just so we can power everything up again and do some washing. Will spend the next couple of days having a look around Kununurra and I suspect a bit of fishing (Alex heard there are a few Barramundi around here still) and then probably head off to Lake Argyle where the girls can enjoy a bit of recreational cane toad bashing!! We are only 800km from Darwin so we are now toying with the idea of heading into the Territory for a while. The weather in Kununurra at the moment is awful! Howling winds with the chance of a storm. It is very cloudy and cold. We have had to pull the jumpers back out!
Anyway, time to go and do a bit of fishing!!!....
