Today we travelled from Bourke to Lightning Ridge via Brewarrina and Walgett via the main road. We actually found it felt strange to be driving on Bitumen. The trip was problem free and we stopped at Brewarrina to see the “fish traps”. The area was very interesting and the town itself was very tidy and obviously has made a big effort. We didn’t stop the night as we arrived early in the morning, but we understand from locals in Bourke that the caravan park has been revamped and is quite good now. The fish traps were obviously working judging by the number of birds diving into the pools formed by the rocks. There were a number of different species of birds including Pelicans.
We then travelled to Walgett and stopped for lunch at very nice park just off the main street. The main street out of town towards Lightning Ridge was closed as the day before the local IGA store burnt down and we had to make a small detour.
The trip to Lightning Ridge was also trouble free and we arrived there and stopped at the information centre to get a town map and other information. We booked into the Opal Caravan Park which is fairly new and has very impressive amenities and a great swimming pool. Two swims for the afternoon. The sites are gravelled, but due to the location that is understandable. There are 2 large grassed areas and 2 camp kitchens along with a car washing area and a dump point. The sites have power, water and sullage points all very close to the van and small garden beds between the sites.
