The Traveller app features accurate high-resolution offline maps across the whole of Australia along with robust tracking and navigation features, so you can confidently find your way. App Store Download

ExplorOz Traveller is available exclusively through app stores. You must purchase and download the app separately for each platform (Apple, Android, Windows) from their respective stores. Transactions are handled by the app stores, not directly by ExplorOz. You can download the app to multiple devices on the same operating system using your app store account and enable Family Sharing for others. In-app purchases, such as the offline mapset (EOTopo) and Membership, are available after installation.

Device Options

The Traveller App is suitable for phones, tablets, iPads, Android Headunits and computers. Most people will already have at least one device that they already own that is suitable for using the Traveller app. On your device, simply open the app store provided on your device & then search "ExplorOz Traveller".

**For WiFi-only iPads and Windows laptops, external GPS receivers are necessary to enable GPS tracking features. See System Requirements.

TIP	Whilst Traveller is not available in CarPlay or Android Auto you can download the app to an AI Android Box Adapter to enable operation on a CarPlay/Android Auto only headunit.

Our pricing model separates the cost of the offline maps from the one-time purchase cost of the app. We do this to avoid bundling them together, which would be more expensive for buyers. This approach provides an efficient and cost-effective way to manage cross-platform use and future map updates.

How does it work?

How to Use the Web-App

The web-app is an online version of the Traveller app. It does not offer active navigation, movement tracking or offline maps, but serves as a convenient planning tool. Whilst you can plan trips in the store downloaded app, the advantage of the webapp is for those who are looking for more device flexibility.

The only advantage of the webapp is that it provides compatibility with PC/MAC and allows the use of a mouse. Once you've made your plans, you can then sync the content back to your travel devices.

All that is required for access to the web-app is an ExplorOz Member account. See Membership.

The webapp is a handy option for:-

users that haven't decided what device they wish to use for trips but have a desktop computer
users wanting a cheaper way to trial the app before purchase
users that already have the app downloaded to another device but want to use a PC or MAC for streamlined trip planning with a larger screen and mouse

To access the web-app, start by using a desktop computer and visiting the ExplorOz website. Make sure you are logged into your ExplorOz account. Once logged in, click on the "Account" button at the top right of the website, then find and click the "Traveller Control Panel" button. Under the Web-App heading, click "OPEN."

Note that you cannot bookmark the link to the web-app; you must access it via the Account button on the website each time.

When you first click "OPEN" Web-App, follow the prompts to log in using your ExplorOz account. This ensures you are logged into both the website and the app. Follow the on-screen prompts to download your Content data, which includes Places, Treks, and Track Logs. There are no maps to download, and no external GPS is required as your location is detected through your internet connection.

FAQ

HOW CAN I USE THE APP ON A COMPUTER FOR VIEWING MAPS & PLANNING?

We offer a browser-based web-app that can be used whilst online on a desktop computer (MAC or PC). It has no active navigation capability so will not track movement instead, it is designed for planning to compliment your portable devices. A Member account is required. This requires purchase of a 12 month or Lifetime subscription see Membership.

To access the web-app, you should use a desktop computer for this task and go to the ExplorOz website. ensure you are logged in, then locate and click the "Account" button, then find the "Traveller Control Panel" button and click it. Under the Web-App heading, click "OPEN."

Please note that we publish digital Help Guides - simple PDF files on a single topic per file. You'll find these Help Guides offer simple step-by-step instructions and large, clear screenshots showing the latest version of the app. We find updating the Help Guides easier than refilming video tutorial so please ensure you check these guides. You'll find them on this page (see Section: Help Guides) and also they are loaded into the menu of the app so you always have them with you (available offline).

WHICH HEADUNIT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

There are a growing number of aftermarket headunits with dedicated Android operating systems which are a better option than buying a CarPlay/Android Auto headunit which is restrictive. See section above for how to use Traveller on CarPlay/Android Auto using an AI Box Adapter.

Here's a list of headunits with a full Android operating system: ECOffroad, VHEIDA, T'eyes, Polaris, plus a growing list of many more brands.

Alternatively, if you wish to keep your older factory-fitted stereo, consider the GROM VLine VL2. This is a box that connects to the back of the unit for integration into the existing infotainment system and display. Available for selected Toyota, Nissan and Lexus. See Cushie Audio.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE APP WILL WORK ON MY DEVICE?

Please refer to the section above "System Requirements". Whilst the app store will permit access to download the app based on operating system compatibility, you must be very conscious of the wide variability of hardware quality in between different brands of devices/models that can greatly affect performance. It is up to you to determine what device you wish to use. If buying new, we recommend buying the best device your money can afford.

WHAT IS THE BEST DEVICE YOU CAN RECOMMEND FOR THIS APP?

We recommend sticking with your preferred operating system (Apple or Android) so you can easily install the app on both your phone and tablet. Utilise features like Family Sharing (Apple) or Family Library (Android) to share the app with partners on the same platform.

The ExplorOz Traveller app functions identically on both Apple and Android platforms. However, Android offers a wider range of device choices from various manufacturers, with varying hardware quality/specs/performance. However, beware of buying cheap Android devices. A quality device will make a huge impact on the app performance and your satisfaction.

Apple does not produce budget devices, so any current model will perform well. When choosing Android devices, opt for reputable brands like Samsung and avoid lower-end models (e.g., prefer S-range over A-range models) for better performance and reliability.

HOW MUCH STORAGE DO I NEED?

The app itself is less than 15MB.

Offline Map Requirements

The EOTopo 2024 map set consists of 4 map packs. When all of these are downloaded the maps will use 9GB storage. However, if you wish to conserve storage you only need to install the LoRes & HiRes packs and you'll still have the maximum zoom and scale display. The optional packs provide additional shading detail for enhanced representation of land features. Map Pack storage sizes are:-

LoRes Pack 85 MB
HiRes Pack 2.9 GB
Contour Pack (Optional) 3.3 GB
Terrain & Hillshade Pack (Optional) 1.8 GB

System Requirements

MINIMUM PLATFORM SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Apple

Compatible Apple devices are iPad and iPhone only (not iMac or MacBook). Must have iOS14 or above. See Web-App for MacBook or iMAC.

Android

There is a wide range of suitable brands of Android devices to choose from. Must have Android 9 or above.

InDash Head Units

Android operating system only with Google Playstore. Android Auto/CarPlay is only supported if you use a CarPlay AI Android box adapter.

Windows

For navigation, tracking and offline use, you must download the app PLUS use an external GPS PLUS configure the GPS using the additional software as explained in the notes about the specific GPS requirements for windows. We also recommend that you check/adjust your System Display Graphics settings to ensure that you configure Windows to use the "High Performance" graphics option when running ExplorOz Traveller. Some Windows devices that don't have large GPU may not need this but if you experience slow map tile rendering then you may find your Graphics setting is configured by default to use "Let Windows Decide", or "Power Saving". This setting affects the speed with which the Windows operating system loads the map tiles.

If you don't intend to use the Windows device for active mapping and tracking on your trip but are just looking to use it for planning, then instead of purchasing the Windows version from the store, refer to the next section about the Web-App option.

Web-App for PC or MAC

If you want to use the Traveller app on a second device for planning trips (but not moving), such as a home/work desktop or laptop computer (either PC or MAC) then the best solution is to upgrade your free user account to a Member account which provides access to our Web-App version of Traveller. This app does not require downloading and is not found in the app stores. Simply log into the Traveller webpage with your Member account and go to your Account to launch the Traveller App (Web-Version).

GPS REQUIREMENTS

Whilst you can use online location services via Wifi and mobile data you will also need to ensure your device has a GPS chip built in or an external GPS otherwise the app will not be able to show where you are when you are offline. NOTE:-

All phones have built in GPS and are a good choice of device.
Most Android tablets will also have a built in GPS.
Some iPads will require an external GPS as the Wifi only models do not have a built in GPS chip.
Windows laptops used for offline navigation will require an external GPS plus installation of GPS Complete software. If you are only using the device for trip planning you don't need a GPS provided you are online.
Using your phone as a Hotspot will not provide GPS when the phone is offline so this method is not a solution for offline tracking.
By default, when the app cannot detect a GPS, it will assign Alice Springs as your location.

Options for Devices without built in GPS

You can still use a device without a built in GPS, you simply need to purchase an external GPS receiver. These are very simple to use with Apple and Android devices but a little more complex to setup with Windows devices. If you need to purchase an external GPS receiver, the following are popular options – Garmin Glo 2, BadElf, Dual XGPS, Globalstat BU-353, but there are also many others that you can use. Please do your own research.

Special Requirements for Windows Devices

Windows "Apps" do not automatically detect external GPS receivers. To setup a GPS for use with ExplorOz Traveller you will need to install an additional software program to configure the GPS sensor as a Windows sensor. The recommended software is GPS Complete (this is free). Go to https://www.gpssensordrivers.com/ to download this program. Follow the specific instructions provided on their website.

due to fault in older Android platforms a work around has been installed to ensure Track Logging movements are recorded and sent to the server. These devices cannot use the intelligent movement GPS system and so a timer has been installed to force these positional updates.
