Description

A familiar sight across floodplains and wetlands in inland Australia is the multi-stemmed dense and tangled shrub commonly known as Lignum. Plants vary greatly in size, as its growth responds to flooding. Plants often appear almost leafless and flowers are inconspicuous, although there are separate male and female plants.

Identification

The main flower colour is cream. Tangled tough stems along inland watercourses, wetlands and dunes.

Uses

Lignum provides critically valuable habitat in wetlands and on floodplains. Early settlers used lignum for thatching.
