Satiny Bluebush or Golden Bluebush

Description

Compact rounded shrub to 50cm high, leaves 8-20x1-2mm, fleshy. It is the golden or reddish tinted fruiting body that attracts attention the wing of which is 15-20mm across, horizontal or wavy with a single radial slit.

Flowering start in August and ends in October.

Identification

The main flower colour is yellow. The plants from South Australia could be M. astrotricha. That species is not found in WA where some of the plants shown came from.
M. georgei is widespread across arid parts of Australia.

Uses

Valuable fodder plant which is likely to die out in overgrazed areas.
