Jug Orchid

Family: Orchidaceae
Genus: Pterostylis
Species: recurva
Main Flower Colour: Other

Description

Unusual striped flowers make the jug orchid unmistakeable. The plant grows up to about half a meter tall with several elongated leaves clasping the flowering stem. Usually only a single flower is produced on each stem, though occasionally 2 or 3 flowers are seen. The green and white colouring of the flowers changes to include red and brown tones as the flower ages.

Jug orchids are found throughout the SW of WA from Geraldton to Israelite Bay, although they are most common in the wetter forest areas.

The species name "recurva" means "bent" referring to the tips of the lateral sepals.

Flowering start in September.
