Shrub or small open tree 3m to 8m high. Flowers in spring with large round flower heads on thick stems, flower heads in showy groups (racemes) 15cm long. Pods are flat and almost straight 10cm x 5mm.
Identification
The main flower colour is yellow. Phyllodes ("leaves") leathery, up to 15 x 5cm, shiny with a prominent mid-vein. There is a prominent nectar gland where the base of the phyllode narrows toward the stem.
Uses
Acacia pycnantha, Golden Wattle was chosen as Australia's National Floral Emblem. It is the wattle featured on Australia’s Coat of Arms, and it is the green and gold colours of the foliage and flowers that provide Australia's official colours.
